Objectives
to promote development of confidence in your ability to write expository prose in
standard English
to foster habits of analytical reading and thinking
to become part of a community of writers
to develop your awareness of the structure of logical argumentation
to develop your ability to function confidently within a library system and over the
Internet
Policies
Grades will be figured approximately as follows: 60% for the essays, 20% for the written
exercises and quizzes, 10% for the midterm exam and 10% for the final exam. Final
course grades
will be assigned according to the following plus-minus scale:
| 93%-100% = A |
73%-76% = C |
| 90%-92% = A- |
70%-72% = C- |
| 87%- 89% = B+ |
67%-69% = D+ |
| 83%- 86% = B |
63%-66% = D |
| 80%-82% = B- |
60%- 62% = D- |
| 77%-79% = C+ |
59% and below =F |
Attendance
You are expected to be in class and participating. It will not be possible for you to do
well on the exams and in the course unless you come to class, take notes, and review for
the exams. In addition, there will be several exercises and unannounced quizzes that can
only be turned in during specific class sessions.

Plagiarism policy
Plagiarism is the intentional or unintentional presentation of others ideas or
words without crediting the source. Please familiarize yourselves with the college policies regarding plagiarism,
which states "Kirkwood students are responsible for authenticating any work
submitted to an instructor." Plagiarism will result in failure on that assignment
and will be reported to the Dean of Student Affairs, who may take disciplinary action.
Failure of a major assignment may result in a final grade of "F."
