PRELIMINARIES

I assume that you already know the basics of using a computer, like installing programs and executing them.  You should also know how to create a folder (or directory) on your hard drive and how to save files to it.

You should have a browser installed on your system, and you should know that basics of using it--how to connect to a URL, how to save a Web page or image to your hard drive.  If you don't know how to do these things, you will need to find out soon.

There are also certain things that you will need in order to complete this course. I would like to know as soon as possible where you stand in regard to these.  To facilitate this, you can fill out the form below.  Feel free to e-mail or call me with questions.

Here is what you will need:

Internet access
You can use an account with an Internet Service Provider (such as America Online or the Internet Navigator) or you can use a public computer that has Internet access (at a school, library, etc.)

Your name:

Do you have an account with an Internet Service Provider?
Yes No

If yes, what is the name of your ISP?

An e-mail account
You will need to have an e-mail account in order to send in assignments, ask questions, etc.  If you already have an Internet Service Provider, you have an e-mail account. If not, you can use a Web-based e-mail service like Hotmail.

Do you have an e-mail address?
Yes No

If yes, what is your e-mail address?

Some way to create your Web pages
You will need a program to create the Web pages, either a special program (such as FrontPage or PageMill) or a text editor (such as NotePad, or even MSWord).

How do you intend to create your Web pages (special program, etc.)?

A host site to which you can publish your Web pages
You will need to have some Web space to post your Web pages.  If you already have an Internet Service Provider, chances are that you are allowed a certain amount of Web space as part of your account. If not, you can get some Web space from one of the many free hosting services on the Internet, such as Geocities or Homestead. Module One has a link to these.

Do you have an account with a host site ?

Yes No

If yes, what is the name of your Web host?

A program to publish your Web pages to the host site
Once you have created your Web pages, you will need to use a program to transfer those files to your host computer.  Generally you will use an File Transfer Protocol program for this, although you might have the capability of using FrontPage's own publishing mechanism.

Do you have a program for transferring your files to the host?

Yes No

If yes, what is the name of the program?

What else would you like to tell/ask me regarding these issues?

About the design of this site:

Whenever there is a link to a site as an example of some concept, the example site will open in a new browser window.  This will allow you to browse around the site as much as you like.  When you want to get back to this site, all you need to do is to CLOSE THE BROWSER WINDOW.  You won't be able to use the BACK button to return to this site.  TRY IT NOW.
